The Pre-Employment Medical
As a manager, one is often required to determine whether or not an employee is healthy enough to perform optimally and safely, given the demands and risks of the job. All such decisions should be supported by expert medical opinion.
The pre-employment assessment determines whether a new employee meets the medical requirements of a position. It aims to ensure that the prospective employee is fit to perform the job effectively with reasonable levels of attendance and without risks to their own health or safety or that of other employees.
We also aim to ensure that the organisation complies with current equality legislation.
Our pre-employment assessment contains a number of the following services, which can be tailored to the needs of the organisation:
-
Health questionnaire
-
Physical examination
-
Functional capacity evaluation
-
Lung function testing
-
Hearing assessment (audiology)
-
Substances of abuse testing
-
Urine analysis
-
Blood screening
-
Vision screening including colour vision screening
In addition workers considered to be at risk of contracting infectious diseases are offered screening and immunisation (e.g. hepatitis B, rubella, tuberculosis, tetanus).
At EHA our pre-employment assessment is governed by important principles regarding quality of service. We believe that medical screening should not delay the recruitment process. We can provide appointments within two working days of a request and ensure a quick turnaround of results and reports.

Health Assessments
Health assessments are essential in determining the ability of an employee to perform the job effectively, efficiently and without further risk to their own health and safety or that of the public or their colleagues. These assessments also need to consider the ability to deliver regular and effective service and the possiblity of altered work performance or conduct.
Assessing employees who have already been identified as having attendance issues is important, to provide prognosis and report on the prospects of fitness to return to work. It is also essential to assess employees to try and improve attendance and to reduce the likelihood of recurring absence. Where absense is due to chronic ill health the employee should be referred for assessment in order to identify what measures may be taken to assist the employee to render regular and efficient service.
Questions which are typically asked as part of the referral include:
-
Is the cause of absence work-related or not?
-
What is the likely duration of absence
-
What is the likelihood of further episodes of sickness absence occcurring
-
Are there any measures that can be taken to facilitate the employees return to work
-
When the employee returns to work, will he or she be fit to resume the full range of duties
-
Are there any fucntional limitations which may temporarily or permanently afeect the employees ability to carry out the full range of duties of the post
-
Should redeployment or other adjustments be considered
-
Is further review recommended
-
Are there any implications for future work perfromance, attendance and saftey?
-
Are there any other workplace implications?
